Firstly, a very happy new year from all of us here in our little encampment behind Castle Point Council Offices.

For those of you who have been off over the festive period, it is now a time to clear those inboxes and finalise our business plans for the year. The recent spate of bad weather and subsequent disruption caused by the strong winds and flooding has again left many businesses exposed to workforce access and supply chain issues. Unless small businesses look to work smarter in reducing their operational risks as well as their overheads, then they risk being left behind. This isn’t always easy, especially with limited capital to invest.

If you’re an SME in the Maldon, Brentwood and Chelmsford postcode areas, there is good news. With funding secured up until December 2014, we can now offer a limited number of EU-backed grants towards eligible projects, whilst still supporting the 5 original South Essex authorities.

Since joining the Low Carbon Business Programme back in May 2010, I’ve seen us support local SMEs to the tune of £1.7 million of EU grant funding. This has helped facilitate capital and revenue projects for over 400 businesses throughout the region.

As a result of these interventions, scores of small businesses are cutting costs, increasing profitability, safeguarding jobs and growing. In this time, I’ve seen hundreds of owners and their staff feel the benefit of investing in new equipment, new processes and; perhaps more importantly; break old habits. This isn’t just a few quid off the gas bill, it could mean increasing your capacity, opening your business up to new markets, staying ahead of legislation, turning waste into income and helping to create new business.

A look at our case studies page will show how diverse these have been, from lighting to compressors and exhaust systems to heat pumps. We can unlock funding to help make projects viable; whether you’re considering purchasing new machinery/equipment, planning changes to your building/ processes, wanting to reduce your material waste or simply lessen the need to travel. I am on hand to offer sector-specific advice and all it will cost is a little of your time and a commitment to help us explore the possibilities.

We’re also looking at running a number of workshops throughout the region on a range of subjects, so do please get in touch with the team for more details.
