TreeFella - Chopping their carbon emissions

Background

Tree Fella are tree care specialists. They came to Low Carbon Business to support them improve the office facilities on their site in Shoeburyness.

Tree Fella were established in 1984 and provide a range of tree care services. They provide a green waste recycling facility for local councils and are also ISO14001 registered.

They decided that the office facilities on their site needed improving as they were in 3 portacabins that were using inefficient electric heaters that resulted in high energy bills. They came to Low Carbon Business for advice and support on what measures would suit their needs best.

Low Carbon Business provided Tree Fella with a dedicated Business Energy Advisor who advised them on what energy efficiency measures they should consider that would be of most benefit to the company.

After consulting with their Business Energy Advisor, Tree Fella decided to install low energy lighting, double glazing, waterless urinals an effluent waste water plant and a Farm 200 Biomass Wood-fired Boiler that would not only produce heating for the office but use waste wood that cannot be sold and is wasted.

As well as giving advice on the project Low Carbon Business was also able to guide Tree Fella through an application for an European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant for 40% of the project costs.

The project costs totaled £38,000 and the Low Carbon Business programme was able to approve an ERDF grant of £15000 for 40% of the project costs.

Outcomes

As a result of the Programme’s assistance, Tree Fella is expected to be able to reduce their electricity demand by approximately 24,000 kWh, water use by 454m3 and divert 12 tonnes of wood from waste by using it as fuel for the biomass boiler. This will result in a reduction of 12 tonnes of CO2 per annum. These measures are expected to reduce the energy costs of the company by at least £4000 each year.

In addition Low Carbon Business have been able to assist Tree Fella by approving an ERDF grant to provide 40% of the wages for an Apprentice for 12 months.

Carol Steward, Company Secretary of Tree Fella, reflected on the project and the assistance of Low Carbon Business. “Our Business Energy Advisor was very helpful. He provided the guidance we needed to show us what measures would be most effective and beneficial to us. The grant from Low Carbon Business was just what we needed to support us through this project”.
