The Hullbridge Centre- Heating up the Energy Savings!

Background

The Hullbridge Centre needed help with the purchase of a new, more efficient boiler. They came to Low Carbon Business for some energy saving advice and a grant.
The Hullbridge Centre was established in 1972 within Hullbridge as a social club open to anybody over the age of 50. The club accommodates a range of activities for its members including dance classes, fitness sessions and Arts & crafts groups.

The hall had a boiler which was very ineffective at heating the building, which wasn’t helped by the fact that the radiators were installed on just one side of the building.
The centre found out about Low Carbon Business from the local newspaper and decided to take advantage of the free impartial advice that was offered. By doing a Green Business Audit it was discovered that the organisation could make some substantial savings on its energy bills by upgrading the 25 year old boiler.

Neil Williams, treasurer of the Hullbridge Centre decided that it was time to replace the old boiler with a new one. Fortunately, Low Carbon Business was able to assist with the payment of the boiler by providing a Low Carbon grant.

Low Carbon Business assisted The Hullbridge Centre by guiding it through the ERDF grant process.

Outcomes

Once the grant was approved The Hullbridge Centre was able to begin the operation of getting the new boiler installed.
As a total the boiler would have cost £4,400. Fortunately Low Carbon Business was able to provide the grant, which effectively refunded The Hullbridge Centre 40% of the money, £1,466.
The new boiler will result in an annual saving of £300-£350. It will also allow 6.05 kWh of natural gas to be saved every year. This means that The Hullbridge Centre will knock 1.11 tonnes of CO2 off its Carbon footprint annually.

The members of The Hullbridge Centre are extremely happy with new boiler as it helps to provide balanced heat throughout the centre.

Additionally, the organisation has purchased a sophisticated thermostat, which automatically adjusts the temperature of the building over timed periods. This will also help the centre to save on its energy bills.

The Hullbridge Centre has now also installed solar panels onto the roof further reducing its carbon footprint.
