Drew Simmons Patterns - Shredding 100% of the waste!

Background

Drew Simmons Patterns specializes in pattern and model making. This creates 48 tonnes of waste a year that is sent to landfill. They knew that this waste could be sold for recycling, but didn’t have the equipment necessary to do this. They came to Low Carbon Business for support.

Drew Simmons Patterns have been trading for over 20 years and are based in Stanford-le-Hope. They produce models and patterns for the automotive industry and various advertising and event companies.

The models are made by CNC milling polystyrene. The dust created by this process is collected, compacted and then sold to a recycling company. However only 50% of waste could be compacted and sold with the rest going to landfill with a lot of waste filling up a room in the factory.

Drew Simmons Patterns knew if they could purchase a single shaft shredder then they could shred and then compact the remaining 50% of waste which could then be sold on for recycling.

Knowing what they wanted Drew Simmons Patterns came to Low Carbon Business to assist them, with the project. Low Carbon Business was able to guide them through an application for a European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant towards for 40% of the project cost.

Outcomes

The project cost of installing the new shredder was £11,995 of which the Low Carbon Business Programme was able to approve a 40% grant of £4,798 from ERDF funding.

The new shredder is now allowing the remaining polystyrene to be shredded and compacted and sold on to a recycling company for £150 a tonne.  This is then used in products such as garden furniture.

It is expected that Drew Simmons Patterns will be able to divert 48 tonnes of waste from landfill resulting in a reduction of 10 tonnes from their Carbon footprint. Additionally the increased amount of waste sold for recycling will result in cost savings of £1740 a year.
