Dave’s News - Cooling their energy costs!

Background

Dave’s News is a Newsagent in Grays High Street. They realised that they were wasting energy with their three current refrigerators, which were kept running 24 hours a day. They came to Low Carbon Business to help reduce this wasted energy.

Due to the nature of the business of Dave’s News, items were kept in the refrigerators over night to keep the produce fresh. Although this was a necessity for the business it was also not very cost effective.

The business was also running four refrigerators non-stop, which was also becoming expensive with their energy bills.

Dave’s News knew that if they could replace three of their inefficient refrigerators with one larger, more efficient one they could save money on their energy bills as well as reducing their carbon footprint.

Knowing what they wanted Dave’s News came to Low Carbon Business to assist them, with the project. Low Carbon Business were able to guide them through an application for a European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant towards for 40% of the project cost.

Outcomes

The project cost of installing the new refrigerator was £5,200 of which the Low Carbon Business Programme was able to approve a 40% grant of £2,080 from ERDF funding.

The new energy efficient refrigerator allows the business to power just one refrigerator rather than three reducing their energy costs immediately. The refrigerator also comes with a ‘blind’, which can be pulled down overnight to minimise energy consumption. They will also be able to move the newer of the current stock to the drinks section.

It is expected that Dave’s News will be able to make annual kWh savings of 6,307 units resulting in annual C02 reductions of 5.7 tonnes. Additionally they will make annual cost savings of £498.90.
